Finding a Professional Interior Designer

If you want to decorate or redecorate your home but don’t feel comfortable doing it yourself you can hire a professional interior designer to do the work for you.  Interior designers will pick out everything—from the furniture to the accessories to the paint on the wall—and have it all set up for you.  For this reason, you must be very careful when choosing an interior designer so that you can trust them to create a room that you will love.

If you want to find an interior designer there are several places to look.  One good way to find a designer is by looking for a room that you like.  Look at rooms in your friends’ homes or in magazines and if you see a room that you really love, find out who designed it.  If you can’t find anything this way, then you can consult your local chapter of ASID.  ASID is an society of interior designers and they should be able to help you find designers in your area.

Once you have found a designer it is important that you look at his or her portfolio with a very critical eye.  You want a designer that has a portfolio of homes and rooms that match your taste.  You should also save magazine clippings of rooms and furniture that strike your fancy and share these with the interior designer to give them an idea of what you are looking for.  You should also be sure to figure out your budget ahead of time and share this with the designer.  Some interior designers can charge a lot of money so you want to make sure that once they take out their share there will still be enough money left for the furniture!
