When to Flip a Home

Kitchen

When you move into a new home it usually comes equipped a stove and oven, refrigerator, sink, dishwasher, cabinets and countertops.  The floor is already tiled, the lighting is already installed and we usually tend to live with it.  The problem is, sometimes kitchens can go decades without being renovated at all.  Many of us are living with cabinets and counters from the 70s and dirty, dingy old stovetops.  There is nothing more dismal than an outdated kitchen, but many people think that it’s easier to learn to live with it than to put the time into decorating.  However, there are a few simple home decoration techniques you can use to turn your kitchen into an oasis!

The first step to take when you want to redecorate in your kitchen is to clean everything.  Break out the scrub brushes and mobs and clean every surface—the floors, the stove, the oven and countertops.  You’ll even want to clean the insides of your cupboards—you have no idea what kind of filth builds up in the very place you keep the plates you eat off of!  Once the kitchen is clean you are ready for some simple decorating techniques.

The first way to spruce up a kitchen is by painting the walls a new color.  There isn’t a lot of wall space in a kitchen, so you can really go crazy with color without being too extreme.

To renew old cabinets and cupboards re-paint them and replace the handles.  You can find all kinds of fancy handles at any home improvement store.  If you have boring blocks of cabinets surrounding your entire kitchen one idea is to remove the doors from one or two of the cabinets and replace them with glass doors (which you can have custom made by a glass cutter).  Paint the inside of the cabinet a bright color and put all of your beautiful and fancy dishes inside.

Bright lighting will also make your kitchen look larger and more cheery!

Top off the project with a fitting pair of shutters or blinds on the windows and, voila!  Your kitchen will be as good as new!
