Dining Room

Your dining room is not only the place you eat, but is the center of family life.  Family meals are eaten in this room and holidays and special occasions are celebrated here as well.  For this reason, it is important that your dining room be a comfortable and relaxed area where you can focus on food and family.

The dining room should be the simplest room in a house.  Overflowing it with color or clutter can be detrimental to the appetites of your and your guests.  This should be a space where the main focus is delicious food and good company and there should be few distractions from that.  After all, these are the only reasons that people go into the dining room.  Nobody expects this room to be fancy.

The real key to home decorating in the dining room does not have to do with painting or furniture.  The key to dining room beauty is accessorizing.  Keep the walls a simple white or other light color and keep the table neutral as well.  Decorate with fine table clothes, candlesticks, flowers in beautiful vases and colorful and unique place settings.  A couple of pieces of artwork on the walls or colorful curtains are okay, as long as they won’t clash with your table accessories.  You can change up your arrangements depending on the holiday as well—have a different set of accessories for Thanksgiving, religious holidays, birthdays and anything else you may wish to celebrate!

If you need to buy furniture there are several things to keep in mind.  How many people will be eating in the dining room regularly?  What is the maximum number of people that will be eating on special occasions?  How often do you have dinner parties or celebrations?  If it will usually just be your immediate family then it can be nice to get a small table that can fold out to a larger size for company.  You can get four to six permanent chairs for the table and nice folding chairs that can be stored and taken out when you have company.
