Full Versus Partial Renovations

Every renovations job is different. Just as we all have different homes in different styles and tastes, so too do we demand different results when we are renovating. Renovation jobs also come in a variety of sizes, from the addition of a new room to a simple replacement of a front door. So when you're looking at making some changes to your home, how do you decide whether to go ahead with full renovations or set your sights on completing a smaller job?

The answer to this question will be what you expect to achieve from your renovations. If you want to give yourself some extra quality of life and make a few small changes to your home, you are probably best to concentrate on partial renovations. However, if you want to substantially increase the resale value of your home and/or intend to stay in your home for some time rather than purchase a new one, you should view major renovations as a long term investment.

Cost will usually play a part in determining the scope of renovations work. A small job may cost just hundreds and you may be able to do the work yourself. However, major renovations require the services of a contractor and the purchasing of materials and sometimes extra labor. Renovations can be costly experiences. This is why it pays to know why you're undertaking renovations and what you want to achieve.

Many people fund major renovations through home equity loans. These loans allow you to borrow against the equity in your home and use the money you raise to fund whatever you wish. Tens of thousands of home-owners each year take out home equity loans to pay for renovations and repairs to their properties. While it is impossible to predict exactly how much return you will get from your renovations when you sell your property, it is fair to say that most people receive between 70 to 80 percent of the cost back.
