Finding the Right Contractor

If you're interested in renovating your home, selecting the right contractor is crucial. The person you employ to make changes to your home will play the most important part in the process. This is why it pays to know what you're looking for before you choose someone for the job.

The first thing you should consider is your contractor's reputation. Have you had first hand experience with him in the past? If not, does he come with a recommendation from friends, colleagues or family? The best way to ensure that you get the right person for the job is to ask around. Avoid dealing with contractors that you have no experience with unless it is absolutely necessary.

You also need to ensure that your contractor has the relevant experience for the job. If you're looking at carrying out major renovations to your home, you should budget for a specialist. It would not be advisable to employ a contractor with a purely electrical background to carry out earthworks! You need to check that your contractor is fully qualified and can provide you with a list of customers that he has completed jobs for.

Finally, but just as importantly, you need to ensure that you have a good rapport with your contractor. Communication is a key ingredient in a successful renovations job. You need to be able to ask questions and convey information clearly and accurately with confidence that your contractor is being as honest and helpful as possible. Be specific about the types of renovations you want and what you envision the end result to be. Your contractor will offer suggestions and professional advice. You are not under obligation to take this advice, but keep in mind who the professional is!

Setting clear expectations from the outset will help you save money. Your contractor can budget for the materials you want and factor them into his pricing accordingly. Make sure you get a quote upfront which factors in the time your contractor will charge you for his work plus the time of any additional laborers that he may need to source for the job.
