Home Auctions

Do you know how a home auction works? Interested in attending an auction to find some great deals or maybe holding your own auction to make some easy cash? The following information will tell you what to expect and how to find auctions in your local area.

Home auctions have become a popular way of getting rid of unwanted possessions. You can make a tidy profit when you sell off items that you haven't used for a long time. Large auctions that last a full day and sell multiple “lots” of goods can be found in nearly every major town and city across the country.

These larger auctions are usually managed by a professional company who will provide staff to sort and track goods from multiple households and will also provide the auctioneer. Some auctions cater specifically for household goods, while others specialize in antiques, tools and other collectible items.

Generally, there are two types of auctions. An unrestricted auction is an “everything must go” sale. This is where you will find the best bargains because at the end of the auction, every item must be sold. For this reason, it is worthwhile visiting an auction a few hours before it closes as you will find many of the original prices drastically reduced.

The second type of auction is a restricted auction. Although you can still find some attractive bargains here, you should be prepared to pay a reserve price. This is a price that a seller has set as the minimum amount he will part with an item for.

You can find out which items are restricted and unrestricted at a local auction by checking the catalogue beforehand, or the auction company's website which will often have pictures of the goods that are being sold.

If you haven't attended a home auction before, it is easy to find information on those taking place in your local area. Remember, one man's junk is another man's treasure. You never know what you may find at an auction.
