Default What Mud Can do to a House

OMG, a neighbor of our on the hillside is living a nighmare right now. We have had a lot of rain lately and because of it early this morning a mudslide slammed into the back of his house and actually busted through the basement wall. It's a terrible mess.

They are digging the mud out. They haven't even really been able to see all of the damage that was done yet but I am sure it's bad.

It literally broke block that the house is sitting on.

I feel so bad for them. I have no idea if they have insurance or not or even if they do, if it will be covered.

It is such a mess. They are going to have to dig it all out, reinforce the floor above and rebuild that wall.

It's such a nightmare I just feel terrible for them.

It's incredible the power of water and mud!

That is so sad to hear and so totally unexpected for them too.

I just wonder if they will be able to get the county or state to come in and build some kind of retaining wall in back of their home to keep this from happening again. It would certainly be in their best interest to contact state and county officials to see if help of any kind would be available to them to prevent any future problems form the hillside.

You may want to suggest this to them. And also, maybe the county can come in now and get rid of the mud that has come off the hillside to keep any further damage from being done.

Thats a great idea and I will suggest it to them.

Mother Nature is one powerful chick! I know I don't want to tangle with her!

I couldn't even tell you how many floods I have dealt with. I live just a few feet from a creek and not much more than a football field away from the river.

It seems like once every few years we have a flash flood with the creek and then the river floods leaving us stranded and usually without power. That always stinks.

Thankfully our basement was built with getting water in it in mind. When they built the house they designed grroves in the floor to help flow the water out.

Needless to say I can never finish my basement but at least we can get the water out without too much trouble.

You just never know what the weather will bring and the damage that can be done.

Im glad that you are going to mention my suggestion to them and I do hope that there is something that the county or state can do to help them out.

Since there has already been one mud slide, the possibility of another one looms in the future and the county or state putting a wall in back of their house would take care of the pending problem.

I hope all works out well for them. Please keep us posted as to what the find out and whether or not the state or county helps them out or not.

This is horrible news, though thankfully no one was hurt when mother nature attacked!!

A retaining wall is something that apparently is needed to prevent this from happening again, and after the mess is cleared away and the damage repaired no one is going to want to deal with anything like this again.

The only problem is that trying to get either the state or the county to put the retaining wall in is going to be a battle most likely. They don't want to spend money on things like this.

In Kentucky an aquaintance of mine went through something similar to this. They had to pay out of pocket to get a retaining wall put in, because they couldn't get any help from either the county or the state.

I wish your neighbors the best of luck through all of this mess. I hope that they will get the wall that they need with out a huge fight about it.

That is sad indeed. We never know when things like this are going to happen. It seems to be common in your area though. I have seen many retaining walls built over the years due to mudslides like these.

Heck the highway ended up closed due to a slide that made a giant hole in it. Well anyway being careful not to remove too many trees and foliage from an area like that will also help to keep the soil from eroding.
