Default Master Bedroom Question

I grew up believing that the master bedroom of a home was always the largest bedroom in the house.

Though while watching many house flipping shows, home improvement shows and what not, this has not always been the case.

I am now confused as to what exactly is a master bedroom, and what makes a bedroom the master bedroom???

I have seen on some of these shows some seriously small bedrooms called the master bedroom when there is a much larger bedroom in the house.

These shows have me confused about this, so I am hoping that someone here will be able to explain this to me so that I will actually understand what exactly is a master bedroom.

I usually associate the master bedroom as the one that has it's own bathroom attached to it. I've seen some of the shows like you're talking about and they show you the smallest room as the master bedroom.

Here is an actual definition of the master bedroom from the internet...

Often defined as the largest bedroom in the home, the master bedroom
Quote:
is normally occupied by the person or persons who serve as the heads of the household. A master bedroom normally will often include more amenities than smaller bedrooms in the home, and may include additional spaces that are directly accessible from the interior of the space. When this is the case, the master bedroom is sometimes referred to as a master suite or an ensuite.
To me, it is confusing as to why they would call a smaller bedroom the master if it does not at least include a walk-in closet or bathroom attached. Is it simply because thats the bedroom closest to a bathroom? Maybe, I don't know.

Another definition for master bedroom reads....

Quote:
The principal bedroom in a house; usually occupied by the head of the household.
So, according to that, any bedroom can be called the master if the head of the household uses it as his/her/their bedroom.

Hmmm, something to ponder lol!

OK well at least I know now that I am not completely losing my marbles. I for the live of me do not at all understand why a home owner would call the smallest bedroom in the house the master bedroom when it is actually the farthest from the bathroom and had no closet space at all.

No wonder it is confusing and making people question this as well. I know I am not the only one who was probably thinking the same thing. Then again I might have been who knows,LOL.

I just think that a master bedroom plain and simply should be the largest bedroom in the house. That would make things better and people would understand what someone is talking about.

I love these shows, and have learned about of different things about repairing things in a house, staging a house, decorating a house, but sometimes when they talk about things and call them something different, it can make understanding what they are talking about a bit confusing.

in my opinion the master bedroom is the room that the person who pays the bills get lol.

ive seen shows like the ones your talking about but usually the master bedroom has a bathroom attached and a nice size closet.

most of the time the master bedroom is the bigest nicest room, but every now and again its a little smaller but most all the time has a bathroom and a wall in closet. hope that helps !
