Default lead paint certification

Has anyone taken the lead based paint class and filed their EPA application yet? I am shocked that it costs $550.

Hi Woody and welcome to New House Flip.

No, I havent taken the lead based paint class, I didnt even know that there was such a thing available for laymen. Let alone, that the price for such a class was so high.

Can you give us more information on this class please. Do you know what the process is to take this class, where you could find this class available at and so on. I am very interested in getting this information out to all that are interested in the class etc.

Hey woody, welcome. Thats a great question. I had not even had a clue about the certification until just the other day.

I have not been certified but doing that sort of work isn't my thing but my husband does do that stuff and so he is going to have to get certified. Did you know that if you mess with the paint and get caught by authorities you can be fined $37,500! I'd much rather pay the certification fee!

Yes I know about the huge fines. There are even rumors that there are rewards for turning poeple in.

I'm still slightly confused if the law applies to flippers. My company (I own the company) owns the home so I am technically working on my own home. The rules states that if you are working on your own home, then the rules don't apply. I'd love some clarification

Okay Woody this is what I found....

Quote:
Homeowners can expressly give workers permission to bypass the new requirements for work on a house they live in with no pregnant women or children six years or younger. However, some local contractors will be unwilling to do that given the risk to their own workers or subcontractors, Stang said.
Still, not exactly clarification but a little more info.

I have to say that I think it is a great thing to have laws to protect children against lead poisoning. On the downside, this law is going to make renovation costs higher because of the added safety measures. The added expense will be passed down to the homeowners. People who don't have a nice big income may not be able to afford to get work done.

You can read more about the new law here....

I have never heard of such laws before. Though these are great to help protect people from lead poisoning.

I guess that if your working on your own home then there isn't a need to take the classes. That is if you are willing to do the work yourself and take the risk of being exposed. Though I can't say that for sure because I have never heard of these classes before.

I don't know if I would want to do that kind of work and expose myself or others to lead like that. Thats a pretty scary thought.

I would however suggest that you take the classes just to be on the safe side.

Hello there Woody and welcome to our forum,I have not ever heard of you having to be certified to handle lead based paint before.

This one is new to me,I am going to have to check that out here where I live to see of it is required or not.

My husband is a painter and these things we should know. Thanks for the heads up.
