This is a bit off topic but something I had not heard of before so thought I'd mention it.
I was reading something about what they call Garden Suites. Basically these are a type of modular homes that can be set up next to an existing home as a place for Grandma or Grandpa to live as they age and can no longer live further distances away. It's a way to have them close enough to care for and not to have to have them reside in nursing homes. It affords them some independancy but they are close enough for family to care for.
These garden suites are not intended to be permanent structures.

Of course, garden suites have to meet municipal building and zoning bylaws. According to the CMHC (Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation), agreements are made involving the host family, the occupants, the supplier of the unit and the municipality. Some municipalities are more flexible than others, so check with your local government before going ahead.

The plus side of the garden suites are that you don't need to make renovations to your home to accomodate special needs such as wheel chair accessibility and so on. These house are made how they need to be.
You can read more about them here...
