Default Emergency Kits

I know that winter is not quite here yet, however now is a good time to start getting yourself prepared.

One thing I have plans on doing this evening is getting out the emergency kits to make sure that everything in there is not outdated and of course to make sure that everything that is needed is in there.

I can't say this for everyone but I know here in my area we at times lose power during the winter because of high winds, ice and snow. Because this happens we try to make sure that we have items like candles, oil lamps, extra blankets, can opener, charcoal, grill and so on. I know this probably sounds like a waste but you would be surprised at how many times we have needed these things because of the winter weather.

We also make sure that we have plenty of bottled water on hand as well. Another thing we do here is to stock up on things like dry goods, canned food and pet foods as well. This way if we end up getting a ton of snow we won't have to worry about going out in it to get things that we need.

Also if your going to check your emergency kits at home, break out the auto emergency kits as well to make sure that everything in them also has all that you need if you get stuck in your car somewhere as well as to make sure that everything in there is not out dated.

That is something that I need to do as well. It seems like our power is out several times during the winter. Last winter we were without for four days in a row. I don't think I have ever been so cold in my life!

I do already have plenty of candles ready to go but thats about it. One of these days I am going to get myself a generator. I want one of those big ones that can run the furnace and stuff lol. I don't ever want to be that cold again.

You are so right, it is time to get those emergency kits out and check them.

We also end up with no electricity for a couple of days in the winter time. And if this winter is anything like last winter, we will certainly be able to use those emergency kits.

I also carry extra blankets etc in my car just in case of a breakdown. No one wants to be stuck along the road and freeze waiting on help.

Its a good idea to take some dried fruit, beef jerky, candy and other snacks with you in case you are stuck for a while. Also something to drink to be sure you are properly hydrated.
