Default A Flooded Living Room

Well the day started off fairly normal. That was until Rob decided to take a shower before work!

We did not know that after his shower, we would have a flood in our living room which is just below the upstairs bathroom!

The drain pipe from the shower had cracked allowing water to escape where it shouldnt have. This caused the water to simply drain into our living room. He takes long showers sometimes and this was one of them.

The ceiling in the living room is now ruined, the carpet is also a huge mess. Furniture that was below the leak was thankfully just an old wooden desk and it seems to be alright.

Though the smell is just horrible!!! I dont know why it smells so bad, but its got the whole downstairs of the house reeking!! The upstairs is thankfully shut off right now, so the smell isnt very bad up there. Its mostly contained on the main floor.

I dont know what to do to get rid of the smell. Anyone have any suggestions? Sure could use some.

I really dont want to have to deal with the odors until the ceiling is assessed by the insurance company. Though I am thankful that we do have home owners insurance. Hopefully it will cover the costs of replacing the carpet, the ceiling and the large amount of clean up that is going to need to be done.

That just really stinks and I feel for ya. I know what a mess water can make! We get flooded all the time where I live and so I know what you are going through.

For the carpet smell I would try the Arm & Hammer carpet deoderizer for pets. It does wonders! Of course dry the carpet as much as possible first. A shop vac will do wonders with the drying.

We did take a shop vac to the carpet, it really did pull alot of the water out.

This evening I will be picking up some of that arm & hammer pet powder. I am willing to try anything to get rid of this horrible smell. Right now no one can stand to be near that room due to the smell.

I need to get the smell under control, because my daughters birthday is comming up soon and I dont want everyone here dealing with something like that.

Thanks for the tip!! I appreciate it. I am also sorry to hear that your home floods so much. That has to something aweful to deal with all the time.

I would have to wonder why it smells so bad. If he was taking a shower then there wasn't any waste in it.

Have you pulled up a corner of the carpeting where it was wet to see what is going on underneath.

The arm and hammer may work for now but if there is another issue it may only mask it temporarily. Good Luck.

Yes we know exactly what the smell is from. The ceiling in the living room is original to the house. The material its made from reeks when wet especially with years and years of dust laying between the floors. We had a gentleman here today to take a look at the damage done.

Right now there is a fan blowing under the carpet of the living room in hopes that the floor wont need to be replaced, as well as a dehumidifier running in there.

The ceiling will have to be replaced, because the material its made from is no longer manufactured, so even though only part of it was damaged all of it will be replaced. The carpet will also need to be replaced, which is something we were planning on doing in a few years, but now there is a need to do it more quickly.

I did try to take a picture of the damage done to the ceiling but I just couldnt get it to come out right. Though I did sort of get one of the carpet being blown around from the fan that was put under it to help dry the carpet and the flooring.

Hopefully come Monday things will start happening around here, because we are not able to even walk through the living room right now and I would like to get our lives back to normal as soon as possible.
