Uncut Grass
Next door to my old man's place there is an empty lot where at one time a house stood.
The house burnt down many years ago I guess, but the grass hasn't been cut in more than a year now. So you can imagine how tall it is now. I am just over 5' tall and it almost comes up to my neck!!
I hate cutting next to that tall grass because I don't like snakes and I keep waiting on one to come slithering out of there. Not to mention that I have seen mice running in and out of there.
I don't want his home infested with snakes and mice and I know it is bound to happen because the owners won't cut the grass.
Any way I am wondering does anyone have any ideas on how we can make the owners get over here and take care of this problem??

Re: Uncut Grass
Check with codes inforcement in your town. Here where I live if you report it the codes office will inform them to mow it and if they don't the codes enforcement will have it mowed and will put a lien on the property.

Re: Uncut Grass
Grass that high really does need cut, there will be snakes in it, and who knows what else might get in there. Not just that it would look bad, lower any house near its property value.

Re: Uncut Grass
TY Realestatehound!!! I appreciate the info. This seriously needs to be taken care of because it for one thing look horrible and secondly as I mentioned I don't want snakes and mice here. There is enough to deal with here with out pests invading.
I hate to be the neighborhood meanie, but I can only take so much. I have kept the grass cut here every week and figure that they should be able to as well.
I guess I could have cut it a long time ago, but the yard I have to cut weekly is already large enough and I don't want to bother with doing more than I have to.
I just figure that if the owner of the property isn't able to take care of it properly maybe he/she should just get rid of it.
Again I seriously do thank you for the point in the right direction!!!

Re: Uncut Grass
Uncut grass on an adjacent property can really be a pain and very unsightly, not to mention snakes, rats, mice, raccoons etc living in the unused property and grass.
And this can be especially dangerous if you have small children around.
And if the grass is as high as you say it is, someone will sure have a heck of a time cutting it the first time. If its not cut by summers end, I would wait until after the first frost then cut it myself. Cut it way back from your property if you dont want to do it all but then you have to worry about someone saying you are trespassing. So theres another problem.
Call the health department and see if they can do anything about it, or the mayor of the town or city you live in. There has to be someone you can get hold of to make the owners cut the grass.

Re: Uncut Grass
I know I am not going to cut it because as high as it is, it's gonna practically be impossible to cut it with a lawn mower the first time. It is just to high. Plus I don't like the idea of trying to cut it and getting bit by a snake or something that has decided to make it a home.
I will do what ever it takes to make sure that it does get cut. It is seriously unsightly and dangerous. Thankfully there are no small children near this property. That would be a huge hazard.
The grass I cut at my old man's place is bad enough because he has a rather large yard to take care of, this is another reason I don't want to deal with that property as well or I would have already done it.
I would rather deal with trespassing issues then snakes, mice and everything else in there.

Re: Uncut Grass
Just a little bit of an update here. As I am typing this the gentleman is now cutting the grass next door. He has some help and I am thankful for that. It was almost as tall as I am.
However he did come over to speak to me about it. I guess he had suffered a heart attack which is why it wasn't cut for over a year. He asked me that should something happen like this again if I would cut it and he would pay for time, fuel, and use of the lawn mower (in other words he said $50.00 per week).
I did agree and we exchanged numbers so it should all be taken care of in the future. I guess he had paid his grandson to cut the grass but only took the money and never bothered to do the work.
He is a very nice man and was surprised when the courthouse contacted him about the grass height. He thought it was being taken care of when it wasn't. At least it has all been taken care of now and won't be a worry any longer.
Thanks everyone for your help on this. I really do appreciate it!!

Re: Uncut Grass
I am very glad to hear that this problem has been taken care of. No more worrying about snakes or critters hiding in the tall grass.
Its a shame that kids do things like this, take the money and not do the work. Older folks depend on the younger ones for things that they cant do themselves and what the grandson did was just wrong.

Re: Uncut Grass
I agree that it is sad what his grandson did, because this man is very sweet and polite. Though it is more often that family will screw ya over before a stranger normally.
