Default Duplex Winter Care

Does anyone know whose responsibile to taking care of cleaning pathways and driveways in a home which has been made into a duplex?

I have a friend who just moved out of a duplex and he was always shoveling the snow in the winter while those living on the other side of him did nothing at all.

They shared a driveway as well as the walk way to the home and this was not right in my opinion. I am just wondering if this is something that should have been discussed between the landlord as well as the renters or if the landlord should have made sure that this was taken care of throughout the winter months?

Firstly I would check with the city. They usually have ordinances that cover this sort of thing. Secondly the landlord should have discussed this with the renters. If he has someone who takes care of the landscaping during the warm months they would normally take care of this too. Its a hard call unless you had something in writing. Checking with the city is important so you know who is responsible otherwise the fines if applicable may be a sudden surprise.

I will inform him to check this out. I know it stinks for him to have to get out there and shovel and clean the snow and ice off everything so that he is safe getting to his car in the drive way and of course cleaning the drive way so that he is able to get out of there to get to work.

I hope that he will be able to get this straightened out because it isn't fair to have someone who is able to do this kind of work, yet would rather wait and have someone else do it.

This is one reason I really wish he would not have moved into a duplex, there are to many problems like this that seem to pop up especially when both sides share the same sidewalks and drive way.

If they were seperated and had sidewalks and drive ways on each side of the house then it would be easier, but that isn't how it is set up at his place.
