Default Big Trouble For Landlord

A friend recently went through a divorce and she moved out of the home along with her son and their 2 dogs. Well actually they moved out a few months ago.

She was working but things were extremely tight for her. Any how she ended up needing to get her car fixed and she didnt have the money to pay both her rent and get her car fixed.

So before she did anything she spoke to her landlord ( I was there with her) about possibly waiting one week to pay her rent so that she could get her car fixed right away.

I"m sorry, but when you have kids, having a car is a must!! Well the landlord told her that it wasnt a problem.

Then three days later when she left for work, apparently her landlord went to the house and placed a padlock on the front and back doors, let her does out of the house to run free (which one is still missing), and left a note on the door saying that she is locked out until rent has been paid in full!!!

She is getting a lawyer to fight this along with my statement. Hopefully it will get straightened out quickly. I thought her landlord was pretty nice, but apparently I was wrong. Until its straightened out she is staying with me.

She also plans on moving out of there as soon as she is able to get back into her place. Ohh and just so everyone knows the landlord did allow her back in to grab personal items and some clothes, which when she was done he locked the house back up, and yes she does have a contract with the landlord which states that she can be a week late with rent as long as the landlord is given notice prior to rent due date.

By law he can not do that!!!! She has to have notice before he can even think of doing this.

She is right to get a lawyer and fight this. It was uncalled for.

I agree, she has paid her rent and he did reopen the house. Though the only she did was enter and begin packing. She is going to sue him over this, but refuses to stay there any longer.

She will be staying with us until she is able to find a more suitable place. Most landlords arent going to fret if the rent is a week late especially when the tenant informs the landlord of what is going on. this man is just a real jerk which is why apparently he has trouble renting to anyone.

All she needed to do was call the police right away. They would have made him come and prove legal eviction and if he could not he would have had to let her in.

I went through this with a neighbor once. I got evicted shortly there after as I was the one who called the police for her. Don't take that crap lying down and she should take him to court that way she gets reperations and he won't do it to anyone else.

Actually she did call the police, though it was more than 2 hours before anyone showed up. Apparently there had been a house fire some where. Though it is all getting taken care of now.

One thing about most landlords they are not nice or your friend all they care about is the money every month. I am sorry what happened to your friend yes I would get a lawyer too, she is going to need one that is not right no landlord can keep your belongings, or lock you out , if they need you to move out for back rent they have to take you to court.

Well she is taking her exlandlord to court over this. I know its going to be easy for her because the law is on her side in this situation. Though I do look forward to being with her through it and seeing the look on his face when judgement comes.

I dont understand why he had to do this to her, especially since she had permission from him to be a few days late on rent. It just makes no sense at all.

Then again I guess some people just like to feel as though they control other peoples lives, which is what this man tried.

She could also get him for animal neglect or even cruelty because of the fact that he let the dogs out to run loose. By all right they are someones pets and if he did that to his own he could get in big trouble for it. It is especially bad seeing how one is still missing. All he had to do was get a rope and tie them each out to a tree or something sturdy so you could get them when you came home. A judge will see it your way on this to. Their are people that get jail time for doing things like that. Go to a lawyer and hang the ass out to dry.
