Default Winter Ready

I know that no one wants to discuss this crap right now, but it is a good time to get yourself prepared for the winter that will be coming.

I went out and purchased things like weather stripping, plastic, kerosene can, and a few other odds and ends.

Everything that I bought was either discounted or it was on sale. No one really needs these things at this time of the year and so now everythings is being reduced in price and makes it the best time to buy what your going to need.

I have a couple of windows in the basement that are old and they leak cold air during the winter. I know they need to be replaced, but til I can afford that they get covered with some newspaper and plastic.

I have also bought the weather stripping, so that I can get the stripping around my doors replaced before winter hits.

Getting ready before winter saves me a whole lot of headache, time and money!!

When winter gets closer stores are going to up the prices on the items that most people need for winter, so by buying things now is seriously gonna save money.

Check around doors and windows for leaks and drafts. Add weather-stripping and caulk any holes you see that allow heat to escape. Make sure doors seal properly.

If your windows leak really badly, consider replacing them with newer, more efficient ones. Keep in mind, however, that replacing windows can be expensive - it could take you quite awhile to recover your costs from the energy savings alone. But new windows also provide other benefits, such as improved appearance and comfort.

I will eventually replace those old windows, but for now until I have that extra money in the budget I will simply just continue to add in weather stripping along with plastic and newspapers. This stops the windows from leaking in the cold winter air.

I should be able to get new windows in another year if my plans work, though as we all know when you make plans such as this there always seems like something happens and all plans get changed.

I will just be crossing my fingers that my luck holds out and I can get them replaced.

That is the only real problem I have with my home during the winter are those basement windows. They are orginal to the house so I won't complain about it.

After I get them ready for winter there are no drafts coming through and the basement stays toasty warm all winter long. Which is a good thing seeing how there is a bedroom down there as well as a family room, lol.

Oh what a nasty word winter is lol! It's cucky!

You are right though, it's so much easier to begin doing these things now while the weather is nice rather than waiting until it's cold. At least gather up the things you will need to weatherize and have them ready to go. You probably don't want to put plastic up to the windows just yet. At least I don't. I want to be able to look out and see the beautiful sunshine and green grass! I will wait until the beginning of Fall to do those things.

We have however, began to get firewood and get it split and stacked. Now is the best time to get your wood if you burn it for heat in the winter. If you get it now it will be good and seasoned and it will burn a lot better come wintertime.

Other things you don't want to put off are painting the exterior of your house and getting the trees trimmed up and so on. Things that you just cannot do once the cold hits you should do now.

I was just scanning through the forum here and glanced up and saw this post and got to thinking, its the middle of July now and soon it will be fall. And you are so right, now is the time to get on all of that stuff that needs to be done before the snow flies this winter.

Checking caulking around window and door frames, filling all necessary spaces with insulation. Insulating water pipes, etc. It all needs done so why wait until the temperature drops to a very unfriendly level to do these chores.

Doing them now can not only save freezing fingers, but you may be able to find some discounts on the stuff you need to finish up these many jobs. There wont be any discounts available once late fall and winter are upon us. Not many anyway.

So nows the time to sit down and make a honey do list and start crossing off those jobs while the weather is still nice.
