Default Rooms for the Kids

Many parents of teenagers are coming up with ideas for keeping their kids at home, instead of having to wonder where they are hanging out, and who they may be hanging out with. A lot of these parents are concerned about their children being out at parties that may have drinking and drugs involved, not to mention the sexual activity. They feel that having a space for the kids to hang out at home is well worth the price of the renovation.

Stephanie Diani for The New York Times
THEIR OWN SPACE The Goldrings, a family in Pacific Palisades, Calif., created an indoor-outdoor cabana-style pool house for their two teenage daughters and their daughters’ friends with daybeds for sleepovers, a bath and shower, and a roof deck.

Quote:
FOR Keith and Tracy Tobias, the parents of three teenagers in La Quinta, Calif., turning an old workshop behind their house into a movie theater for their children was an obvious move. “We’re very social and our kids have grown up with that,” Ms. Tobias said. “We’re a party family.” In fact, the couple’s reasons had to do with more than their love of fun. The Tobiases were looking for a way to keep their children at home.

I think it's great to have a room for the kids to hang out in at home. Having raised 3 daughters, I know the worry that comes from having a child out at a party. A parent is never absolutely sure that all is well, unless he/she can look around the corner and see what is going on. I know I was always happiest when the kids were hanging out at my house with their friends.

Wink Rooms for the Kids

This is a GREAT idea. A child at home is a huge worry off of the parents, and anything to keep them that way as much as possible is well worth the costs of renovations. To many times I have seen in the news a child has disappeared, or was rushed to the hospital due to drug or alcohol related illness. It's really horrifying. I would suggest this idea to everyone I know. Thanks for taking the time to make this post, this information could just possibly save a few lives.

Default Rooms for the kids.

We didnt have any special rooms for kids to hang out in other than my daughters room, but our house was always filled with teenagers when our youngest daughter was a teen.

It was nothing to have 10 or 12 kids here in the evening after school and the ease of mind of knowing where the kids were and what they were doing was great.

Plus, all the parents knew where to find their kids if they needed them for any reason and that was just as great for them too.
