Default Old Metal Cabinets

Around here we have several old metal cabinets. They are all in great shape though due to a leak in the basement, there are a few which have become a bit rusted on the bottem.

Because these cabinets are still in great shape and do get used alot, we are removing the rust from them, and possibly replacing the metal if it has become to rusted.

To help protect these metal cabinets from future damage, we are also planning on painting them with rustoleum paint, which will also help protect them in case of another basement leak.

I dont want to get rid of these cabinets, because these are quite old and still look very good, they just need a little pick me up.

A bit of sanding and a new coat of paint is proably all that they are going to need.

This is going to be a weekend project, unless I get tired of waiting and decide to dive in and get it done earlier,LOL.

Small things like this around the house, really make a big difference to the over all look of the homes interior. Right now with the rust being so visable on these cabinets, really makes the house look messy even though its not. Though when finished repairing them and painting them, they will look good and so will the rest of the area around them.

It is great that you are able to salvage them. I swear the things that are older, last longer. I think things used to be made a lot better than they are today.

The thing is, having the time to take on those kinds of projects. I swear, I am lucky to have time to sleep once in a while lol.

It is hard getting projects like this done, because of issues with time. Though every now and then I find myself with a little extra time, and this is when these types of projects get done.

I too am glad that these metal cabinets are still useful, even though they are going to need just a tad bit of work. They will be well worth it in the end.

You are right when you said that items that are older were made better. This is so true. Everything made now just about is made from press board which falls apart to easily.

I rather have something that is old which is going to last a long time rather than something new that I will have to replace again in a couple of years.

Because the weather has been iffy lately I havent had the chance to sand the cabinets down and give them a new coat of paint.

Though I have made a spot in the garage to do all of this in, so now I just need to get the cabinet in there to get it all taken care of.

Once they are done, they will be moved upstairs into a spare room, where they will be used to store extra blankets and sheet sets.

They are going to look great, and of course they will be put to good use as well.

If you do wind up keeping the cabinets in the basement, you can try to get a skid to put under them. Then you ever get another leak in the basement, the bottom of them will be protected.

You might look around down there and see other appliances or items you might have, might get damaged if it gets wet. Skids are my friend around my house. I put my firewood on it to keep it off the ground and help keep them

Normally I never have to worry about the basement leaking. It is sealed very well. The reason the metal cabinets had gotten wet was because someone had left a window open during a very bad storm which we had here a while ago. The rain water had gotten inside the cabinet and then just sat there. No one knew it had gotten wet in there.

Now if we are expecting any rain at all, the basement windows are checked along with those throughout the rest of the house.LOL.
