Things to be Aware of in Older Homes
Older houses appeal to me because they have more character, they have seen time whereas newer homes just don't have that. The thing is, you just don't know what you might get with older houses.
Before you buy you can do a few things to make sure the house is worth putting money into.
1. Check the air quality. Air quality will tell you a lot about a house.
2. Check the walls for black cobwebs or an oily residue. That can mean that the furnace isn't functioning properly or that there was a fire.
3. Check for previous permits with the city. That will tell you of any renovations that were done and if asbestos and lead paint are present and were possibly disturbed during renovations.
4. Peeling or bubbling paint, swollen wood and discolorations all indicate water damage.
5. Excessive painting. If you notice that everything has been painted, floors, ceilings, walls, and other wood structures in the house it can mean that they are trying to cover up a mold problem.
