We have all seen the hundred year old homes. I love the architecture
and love when I get the opportunity to get inside one. The old rock lathe
walls are wonderful
These homes have their own unique designs and I believe that everything
should be done to keep them as original as possible. We do however have
to bring them up to code.
This can be done and of course not cheaply. I believe however that these
homes have values that are beyond worry. There aren't many of them left. Most of the ones that are are museums. I toured a home once that was a hundred year old brick with all of the original walls and fixtures. The rooms hadn't been redone to new standards or enlarged to make them something else. Victorian homes should always keep with the original layouts.
Love of originality will sell the home and updating around that originality will bring it up to code and into the modern era. I have always wanted a 2 story home like the old ones. Dang if I can find one. Most of what I see now are old farm houses with rippled floors and what we call Michigan basements. Nothing more than dirt crawl spaces.
So many people let their homes fall down around them and then want to sell for top dollar. It really is a shame.
just the thickness of the walls and floors alone are a great selling point for me, i hate hearing everything thats going on in the next room or downstairs or up....in old sturdy houses, that is not a problem!
