Default How to Strip Paint

Paint doesn't always have to be stripped before painting a new coat. Test it by placing a piece of masking tape on it, if the paint comes off with the tape it needs to be stripped.
There are several ways of paint stripping. Heating, Scraping or use chemical strippers. Scraping is the cheapest way but takes time and effort. Chemical stripping is fairly easy, apply the liquid, let set, scrape off. Use a blowtorch to heat and melt the paint. DO NOT do this on lead based paints, it will release toxic fumes. Be very careful not to scorch the surface.

Old paint does not always need to be stripped before painting a new coat on top. It can sometimes actually serve as a good undercoat. To test if the old pain needs to be stripped, stick a piece of masking tape on the area, if the paint peels off, it needs to be stripped.
Home Improvement Tips

I have never stripped any paint before but would like to do my staircase to bring out the natural old wood. I don't think the heating ways would work well for me, I am sure I would hurt myself. LOL. The chemical strippers sound like the best fit for me.

Default How to Strip Paint

I'm sure the chemical strippers would work best on a staircase, there are always so many grooves on them to get into. Before you start stripping though, be sure to ventilate the area. Some chemical strippers can cause harmful fumes that could make you ill. Read the label carefully, so you are aware of the possibility. Good luck with your project and let us know how it turns out!!

No it isn't always necessary to strip paint especially off of walls but you should always prime the walls before you paint especially if you don't know what type of paint you will be painting over. Certain types of paint will cause the existing paint to bubble and peal. So you can either test a area to see or just cover your self and the waste of time and just prime it.

There are a lot of times that you can just wire brush off the
peeling paint and then proceed. We did this on the block foundation
before we repainted and haven't had any problems with it holding.
Besides I hate all the effort and the smell. Yuck.
