Default How to Properly Remove Moulding,Trim & Baseboards

Usually you will find moulding, trim and baseboards are being held by nails and sometimes glue. If not removed properly, you may damage them and then they may need to be replaced. Matching your trim to perfection and making the exact cut can be quite difficult not to mention the cost. Follow these simple guidelines and avoid the hassle of replacing them.

Most moulding is held in place with nails and occasionally with adhesive. Moulding can be removed and then reinstalled, but if it has split or been dented, while taking it off, you may end up having to replace it. Removing wood moulding isn't difficult, but care must be taken to avoid damaging it, the wall or other surfaces. Some moulding is not very expensive, but finding an exact match may be difficult and the labor to refinish, cut and reinstall new moulding can add a lot of time to a project. That is time that could have been saved if the old moulding had been carefully removed.
ACME DIY

I live in a very very old house and the baseboards and trim have become somewhat brittle. I really don't want to have to replace them though because they are the originals. I try my best to not pull them off the walls but sometimes there is no choice. I will keep these guidelines in mind the next time they need to be moved and hopefully save from breaking any of them.

Default How to Properly Remove Moulding,Trim & Baseboards

It can be difficult to remove moulding, trim and baseboards, especially on older homes with the original ones still in place. Many times you will find that the trim has been painted over several times too, which makes it even harder to remove without damaging it, or the wall behind it.

This article makes some very good points which will help in the removal process without damaging either the wood, or the walls. I will have to keep it in mind, should I decide to paint my walls as I have been planning to do. I don't want to paint the wood trim, but am not the neatest painter, lol. I wouldn't want to try to paint the walls with the trim still in place.
