Wink How do paint colors effect your home

When summer comes around , can color reduce the energy consumption in your home?
Consider this: Would you be cooler wearing a light colored shirt or a dark colored shirt on a hot sunny day? If your science teacher or parents didn't convince you, the scientific fact is that white reflects the radiant energy rays of the sun and black absorbs them.

The same principle has a significant impact on a house. The hotter the roof, the hotter the rooms below. Light colored roofing or reflective coatings are like a light colored shirt for your house because they reflect radiant energy.

Even a light grey hue is better than a blue or green. The colors used inside a residence or workplace can also save on energy costs. The Environmental Protection Agency reports that electric lighting accounts for 25% of the electricity used in the U.S.A.
The same principle, the lighter the color the higher the reflectivity can be applied. Dark walls absorb more light and reflect less. Consequently, far more lighting is required for rooms with dark walls than those with light walls. In addition to the walls, it is a good idea to keep the ceiling light and bright for good reflectance.

Some major paint manufacturers can tell you the Light Reflectance Value (LRV) of any color paint chip. White reflects 80% of the light, black 5%. Therefore, the higher the LRV number of the paint color, the less artificial light you will need.

Caution: Don't go overboard. An extremely high lighting level combined with very light walls is bad if it creates glare, or too much brightness on the wall. This causes excessive stimulation and irritation of the eyes. Eye fatigue will follow.

Default How do paint colors effect your home

These are great tips to consider when choosing paint colors for your home, inside and out. You should decide on colors that appeal to you and that can help you save money. I always just choose colors that I like, I never consider the different benefits of colors. Thanks for the tips.

Default How do paint colors effect your home

At one time, I had painted my living room, dining room and kitchen all white. Besides being completely boring, and the "institutional" to these rooms, they were entirely too bright.

Now my kitchen is yellow, and while there is still a lot of light reflection, it is bright And cheery. The other two rooms, I have painted in light pastel colors.

When I go into my living room, its to relax and either watch TV or read and the living room, painted white, was definitely not conducive to relaxation.

It amazes me that the color's we choose for the inside as well as the outside of the home can effect our lives. Not only will the color you chose effect the energy savings in the home but will also effect your mood, so when you are planning to paint your home inside or out, take great care in the choice of colors you are choosing. Be sure you like the colors, but also make sure they are not to awefully dark or to light. I hope that this post will be of use to everyone the next time you decide to change the colors of your home.
