Default Wintertime Home Projects

Go green and save green.

Most of us just want to curl up in front of the fire sipping hot cocoa when it's cold outside but really it's the perfect time to get some things done around the house.

For one thing it's a great time to dye test your toilet. A leaky toilet can cost you an arm and a leg. This takes about ten minutes and some food coloring. It's perfectly safe for the toilet. Just put in five drops of food coloring in the tank. Wait ten minutes. If you see the coloring in the toilet bowl then you know you have a leak. Nine times out of ten it's just a bad flapper in the tank and is cheap and easy to replace.

Install new lighting. It's the perfect time to be rid of those old energy sucking fixtures. Now not everyone should take on this project. Have someone experienced do it for you if you have never done it before. Make sure the electricity is off!!!

Finish your basement. Okay so this is a big project but one well worth the effort. Not only will you save on heat because of the finished walls, floor and ceiling but look at the added living space value you will get. Again, not something you might want to tackle all by yourself.

So before you you laze about and put on thirty pounds during your hibernation.... get a kick start on some home improvements.

Great tips you have listed here. I didn't know you could test your toilet for leaks like this. I am looking forward to testing mine to see how it turns out.

I would hate to do this at my old man's place because his bathroom is so outdated that it's unreal.

I know that so far this winter I have gathered things up to be donated, things used for a yard sale, some serious cleaning. I don't like being stuck inside all of the time but since I don't have a choice I may as well make good use of my time.

Though come spring time I will have a lot more to do. I plan on having a yard sale, doing some landscaping work and so much more.
