Default The Oil Spill

Even those like me that don't watch a whole lot of TV I am sure have at least heard of the huge oil spill which is still flowing into the ocean just off the Gulf of Mexico.

I wanted to discuss the effects that oil spills have on the environment and what it does and can do.

Oil spills effect us all. Not only the animals and people in the area of the spill but the entire world. No I am not talking about money here either.

You see when there is an oil spill, the oil leaks into the oceans which in turn has a huge impact on mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and other sea life. Oil spills effects the temperature, oxygen levels and so on. These things seriously effect the food chain and that in turn effects the reproductive cycle of all these animals and creatures. Then of course this effects the nature of the animals as well as behavior.

And this is for those animals which are lucky enough to survive an oil spill. There are thousands of animals which die because of these accidents. They become caught in the oil and are suffocated, drown, or they lose their ability to keep themselves warm due to being coated in oil.

Oil spills also effect the people in these areas because the main source of income for many of these areas is fishing. Though when there is an oil spill, fishing is stopped and this means that families suffer largely because of the lack of income.

Oil spills also take money out of our pockets because the companies responsible for the spill are only forced to pay up to ten million dollars to clean up these spills.

This is something I seriously disagree with. These companies should be responsible for 100% of these clean ups seeing how they are th cause of it.

Here is a bit more on this story that you may also be interested in reading as well.

I can not believe all of the lies that BP has spread about the amount of oil that has been leaking out trying to keep the truth from us about the fact that the spill is the largest in history.

The government is just as much to blame they should have made sure that better back up plans were in place in case of disasters like this one.

The fact is the entire east coast is likely to see oil on their beaches in the near future.

You are going to see the affect of this spill for many years down the road. I wish people would first CLEAN up the spill then spend their time finding out who is to blame.

It is ridiculous to me that oil is still spilling into the Gulf this long after the accident.

I know that no matter what I do BP will always end up with some of my money because they are such a huge company but what I can do is never to purchase fuel from a BP gas station! I will never again purchase their fuel from a station. They lie and they will not have my business.

We could all do our part and make sure that BP fuel stations take one heck of a hit by not going there to purchase your fuel. Then maybe they will get the picture that we the people are not going to stand by and allow them to destroy our environment because they do not have better back up plans to prevent this kind of destruction to our planet.

The oil now has been leaking for over a month now if I am correct. They have managed to slow down the amount of oil leaking into the ocean, though slowing it down is NOT stopping it.

The effects that this oil has on our environment and the environment of the animals is going to cause serious problems for many, many years to come.

I am honestly pissed that this happened and is continuing to happen!!!! Animals are losing their lives and of course their way of life has been disrupted and as well as those who live in these areas are losing their only means of supporting themselves and their families.

BP should have known that something like this could happen and had several plans of action in place to make sure it never became this bad. Though as you can see they were to busy making sure that they got their money and didn't give a shit about anything else.

BP Brands:

BP, ARCO, ampm, Aral, and Castrol

As far as Gasoline:

Quote:
We use the BP and Amoco brand names in the USA east of the Rocky Mountains and ARCO in the west
ampm is a convenience store with the gasoline.

Aral - Germany's gas stations

Castrol - Oil and lubricants

Well as of today it looks like they have finally gotten a grip on what is going on with the oil spill.

They have finally gotten it where they can cap it off, which they are doing right now as I write.

They are not sure exactly how long it will take to clean all of the spilled oil up though or wxactly who will and will not see any oil along their beaches eventually.

I was just watching this on the news a bit ago and I was under the impression that they were not sure if it could be capped off because the pipe is jagged and to cap it off it needed to be smooth.

I could be wrong about this and I surely hope that I am. There has been enough damage done by this horrible spill that we are all going to be feeling the effects of it for many years to come.

I really do hope that I simply missed something in the news broadcast and that they are able to get this piped capped off and stop even more oil from spilling out.

One thing I really don't understand is how and why BP was attempting to down play the severity of this spill. Do they really believe that they can hid it??? I mean come on the oil is spilling out and has been for about a month or more. Do they think the people are completely stupid and we wouldn't know or find out???

Another thing I would like to know is why in the hell is there a cap on the amount that these companies like BP have to pay if there is a spill?? That does not make any sense to me at all. If they are the cause of the spill then in my opinion they should be responsible for the entire amount of the clean up costs.

That is like going to the grocery store and getting lets say $500.00 worth of groceries and then telling the cashier that there is a cap on the amount that you want to pay for your groceries. Guess what that shit don't work!!!!

I agree that this oil spill in the Gulf has gone on way too long. After the first week of BP's rig spilling hundreds of thousands of gallons into the life-filled ocean water, I figured they'd have a solution by then.

What actually happened to BP for the first week or two of oil-spewing?
I know it did take a while for them to put out the oil tanker fire, but during that time they should have had some kind of emergency backup in place for this kind of catastrophe.

My guess is, that now they will have emergency measures put in place before a tanker pulls up to an oil rig so this doesn't happen again.
I bet if they made a floating island that could be moved away from the oil rig during tanker fillings this would take away the possibility of it happening again.
If an emergency arrises on a tanker or the oil rig itself, have a movable floating island with emergency shut-offs that could be detached, and thus less oil spills.

You would think that oil companies would have better emergency plans in place to prevent these things from happening, though as we can all see they have nothing.

Just last night watching the news I heard that as of right now they estimate the cost of clean up to be around $69 million. Though I don't know if that was before or after what BP has to pay.

After all that we do to try and help this planet and get it cleaned up and keep it that way, along comes BP to destroy it all. I know that sounds harsh but come on let's be honest here.

Because of their mistake and the fact that they were not at all prepared for an emergency we are going to be paying the price for many years to come as well as all of the life which thrives in the ocean!!!

I haven't watched the news today, though I know that they had a plan to try something to get the oil stopped. I hope that it works. This has to be stopped and SOON!!!!!!!!!
