Default Starting plants for you vegetable garden.

Soon it will be time to start your plants for your vegetable garden. Tomato and pepper plants are two that are very easy to start indoors from seed and are very easy to care for.

I prefer to start mine in the little peat pots, that way, they can be transferred to larger pots as they grow or directly to your garden, cutting out the need to remove them from regular pots in order to transplant.

I use MiracleGro plant food for vegetables to fertilize my plants and have always had great success using this product.

A grow light may be needed each day to insure that they get the proper amount of light to help with healthy growth. These bulbs replace sunlight and are reasonably priced. The few cents more on your electric bill for using these bulbs for 10 hours a day is well worth it when you start harvesting your fresh vegetables.

I don't have anything ready to be started yet but I would almost bet my Mom is ready to go! In just a couple of months she will have her house filled with plants in peat pots ready for the garden. She mostly grows tomatos and peppers but she will have a few other things going too. She always starts them inside just as you do and she always has great success.

I have lived in places where I havent had room for a garden so what I did was plant tomato plants and pepper in between existing flowers in any available flower bed.

Cucumbers and squash, as you know put out vines and therefore would take up too much space indoors. And the cucumbers and squash themselves are too heavy to have them grow upright.

You may be better off planning to buy those two item at a fruit and vegetable stand somewhere this summer.

But, the tomatoes and peppers can be grown in a large container on your deck or patio with no problem at all.

I saved tomato and pepper seeds from my last harvest that will be planted in my little peat pots. I also saved flower seeds from several different varieties from my own plants and also from some flowers that I begged from my neighbors in the fall.

I should have some really great flower beds and also a vegetable garden that will give me a lot of fresh vegetables for the summer months, and also on into the winter months next year as I plan to freeze or can my excess vegetables.

Pat, I agree with flippinout - just plan to plant some vegetables in some large pots on your patio or deck - or along your sidewalk and you can have enough fresh tomatoes and peppers to get you through the summer without having to buy any! Also, don't forget to plant some herbs also, these can be used fresh for summer use and also you can dry any excess herbs to be used during the winter. Fresh herbs really bring a lot of flavor to a favorite meal.

Thank you all for your vast knowledge of everything! lol

I am on my way out to go buy some big planters and seeds so i can do exactly what you said. i would of been so unhappy this summer without a garden of mine own, while this will be small and will not have all the stuff i would love to grow, atleast i will have my tomatoes!! lollll

with the expense of veggies nowadays, growing your own is the smartest , money saving idea anyone can do, and you know they are safe!...Is there any suggestion on the best brand of seeds to buy??

THankyou

I don't know why I didn't mention the hanging baskets. You can buy kits that contain cherry tomato seeds, a hanging basket and soil - everything you need to grow your cherry tomatoes in the hanging basket. I've had good luck with them, and am sure you will too. You can also get the baskets with strawberries, but I've never tried them yet.

The baskets can be found in most departments stores (WalMart usually carries them) also check home improvement stores - I know Lowe's in my area sells them. Good luck! I'm sure you'll have some nice tomatoes and strawberries for your table this summer

Sorry though, I must not have made myself clear here, you do have to plant the seeds in the baskets, everything you need comes with it, but you have to put it together - instructions are included for you though and it's very easy!
