Recycling Down due to Economy
The economy seems to be hitting most businesses these days. We spoke of "junking" for profit earlier this year, when the price of metals was high and it was a good way for people to make some extra cash.
Now, the price of metal has really fallen and "junking" has lost a lot of appeal that it had earlier in the year. Not only has the price of metal taken a plunge, but also other recyclables, such as paper. Cardboard in Ohio used to bring $105 per ton, is now down to just $22.50 per ton. Quite a drop in price, which means that people aren't recycling it as they were earlier. This is causing worry that more cardboard will end up in landfills, instead of being recycled.
The downturn in recycling is also causing the loss of jobs in the recycling centers, as those businesses don't need (and can't afford to pay) as many people to get the job done.
