Default Large Rocks

With recent work being done in my old man's area they have unearthed some rather large rocks while digging. Some of these rocks most likely weigh around 20 to 30 pounds.

I was thinking that it would be a shame to have them just dump them off somewhere when I could use them.

Of course while talking to the foreman about letting me pick through the rocks they had dug up I was also in the process of trying to come up with ways to use them around the house.

There were a total of 5 rocks that I decided to keep. On 4 of these rocks I plan on painting things that my sweetie has interests in. He enjoys racing, music and shows from the 60's.

So my plans are to paint a guitar on one rock (because he plays guitar), music notes on one, a race car on another and a peace sign on another with rainbow colors, and then place then around the front of the house after I have moved his flowers.

Then on the last rock I plan on painting his house number there and placing it by the mail box out front.

I figured that these things were great ways to reuse something that mother nature gave to us, and it is better than these items being dumped in a landfill which is where they were headed to which I just found out.

Those rocks being decorated will be a focal point in your yard and add some curb appeal.

Rocks can also be used around a water feature, and as you said, decorated in a theme the home owner likes.

By placing a large rock by your mail box, you may end up not getting your mailbox knocked over this winter by a car that has slid on an icy street. So the usage there is twofold.

Don't forget, you can always hide a spare key under one!

There are several great uses for large rocks. Though of course most of the time people rather have then hauled away rather than find a use for them.

The only drawback of these large rocks in a yard is that you have to weed eat around them. That is like the worst part of having them.

I have recently decorated a couple of rocks to resemble grave markers. They look great out in the side yard in my make shift cemetary.

Then when Halloween is over I will take the stones and scrub them clean again and paint on them something for Thanksgiving and repeat the process for Christmas.

Or I may just paint one side of the rock for one holiday and the other side for the next holiday. I am not sure, I really need to get my hands on some more large rocks.

Decorations like these are great, because people really can't mess with them. I don't see anyone picking up a 30 pound decorated rock and walking off with it,LOL.

Thats a great idea of how to use the rocks. You can make sort of a rock bed with them rather than flowers.

I have seen people who have large hillsides put rocks all over them so that they don't have to cut the grass. If you do it right it looks really nice and the appeal is knowing that you don't have to fight with the hill to keep the weeds down!

I'm actually moving some large rocks (in the range of 12" to 24" across) to help line the area around a culvert that goes under my driveway. Over the years, previous owners of this house must have used them for decoration around what have now become overgrown flowerbeds and pathways. It seems everytime I mow or walk around in the yard, I find another huge stone in what seems to be the middle of nowhere. Gathering them all together has been like a stone-age Easter egg hunt (pardon the pun)! It's my hope that having rocks around the culvert area will help guide the water and will look a lot better than the current area of flattened grass.

And you can avoid trimming around a rock feature if you at first put some mulch or pine straw down. I always think this looks a little more professional--makes it look like the rocks were meant to be there and you have a little more separation between the grass and the landscaping.
