Default Gardening Green

Soon it will be time to get our gardens going. Though I am hoping that more and more people are looking into ways to keep pests and animals out of the gardens with out the uses of the many chemicals that are available on the market.

I know I have turned to the internet many times to learn how to get rid of different bugs that were invading my garden and each time I thankfully found ways that got rid of the pests but with out using anything that would harm my garden or cause us to ingest something that can make us sick or even worse.

I am hoping that everyone who reads this will also take the time to find a variety of ways to garden this year and leave the chemicals on the store shelves where they belong.

For just about every pest there is, there is also a natural way of getting rid of it, and making sure that we stop poisoning the planet.

Happy Green Gardening this year everyone!!!

I can't wait to get outside and start working with flowers. I am so tired of the cold weather. This has been the second coldest winter here in history!!

I never use pestisides on my plants. I find something natural to take care of problems. There is always something to help if you look hard enough.

I know that if you are a green gardener, you might like these helpful hints.

1)If you have ants in your garden a non chemical option for getting rid of them is to put grits on thier bed. They will leave every time. The grits soak up moisture from the ground or rain, they swell and run them out.

2)If squirrels are in your garden another way to get rid of them the green way is to put peppermint around your garden, squirrels are allergic to pepperment and stay away.

I know that these things work because I have used them for years.

Thanks for these tips Troubles74, I never knew squirrels were allergic to peppermint, I will have to pass this one along to a few friends of mine who deal with this problem every year.

We have mostly problems with snails, ants and other creepy crawly things around here, but we have thanks to the internet been able to find some really great ways of keeping them away from our gardens.

Though it all depends on the area that you live in and of course what it is that your planting. These things impact the types of pests that you will or could possibly find in your garden.

Though just a bit of research for your area and knowing what is invading your garden you can find a great and natural way of dealing with the problem before it gets out of hand.

One of the big problems this spring will be the deer in our area. They have had a very hard time surviving this past winter because of all of the snow that we have gotten and as soon as new plants start popping out of the ground, they will be there to dine.

If you want to protect new plants, use some chicken wire to build a protective barrier over your new plants that will be coming up. This way the deer wont be able to get to them.

Another option is to buy "coyote urine" at a hunting supply store and sprinkle it around areas you dont want the deer to come near.

Happy spring planting.

Another way to keep deer out of your garden is to sprinkle hair around the area. You can pretty much go into any hair salon and tell them what your doing and they will give you what they have swept up from the floor. I know it sounds crazy but it works great. Deer do what they can to usally avoid people and the smell of human hair in the area will keep them away.

If rodents and cats are a problem with your garden sprinkle either moth balls, orange peels and coffee grounds and this will keep them away from your garden. Also if you have young saplings around your property take a few strips of fiberglass insulation and wrap it around the tree, this will keep rodent away.

To keep birds out of your garden you can make a scarecrow to ward them off or even better take a few old foil pie pans and string them up. The noise of these blowing in the wind along with the movement keep birds away quite well.

If your growing corn and want to keep rabbits and raccoons away, plant squash around the corn and sprinkle the plants with a bit of talcum power and your problem will be solved.

Now if your having problems with spider mites, aphids or other pests mix 4 tablespoons of dish liquid with 1 gallon of water and spray your garden.

For pests like spiders, ants, cabbage worms, and caterpillars mix a few cyenne peppers with some water in a blender and spray your garden and bye bye pests.

These are all natural ways to keep a variety of pests away from your garden and to help keep you from using harsh chemicals. I hope that these tips will help all gardeners go green this year.
