The choice of potting soil will have a big impact on caring for the plant. The best potting soils are either soil-less made primarily of peat moss and vermiculite) or a high quality soil-based mixture, made of equal parts of peat, compost, sand and garden soil.

When it is time to water, make sure you thoroughly soak the root ball of the plant.

Unless the plant is looking unnaturally pale, do not fertilize. This just asks the plant to grow and growth requires lots more light and water. If you do have to fertilize, use a water soluble food at half the recommended strength.

My inside plants consist of a couple different kinds of Ivy, Broleiads, diffenbachia, spider plants, peace lilies, boston ferns, aloe, orchids, asparagus ferns, and several other kinds.

All of these are very easy to grow indoors and do great on my deck in the summertime. They are all on a weekly watering regiem with fertilization happening every 3 months and the fertilizer I use is called Miracle Gro and it very simple to use.

There is nothing hard about raising houseplants, but a few will need extra water in between regular waterings and the ones of mine that do are the boston ferns and the peace lilies. Other than that, its only minimal care required.

I typically have a pretty green thumb but when it comes to one of my favorites, ferns... I have no luck at all! I don't know what it is that I do or don't do but I can't keep a fern alive to save my soul. I think they are beautiful though.

It used to be that I couldnt keep my ferns alive to save me. But I finally got the knack and now have a couple of very pretty Boston Ferns.

I water mine once a week, really well, then in between times I spray them all over with water. Ferns love moisture and spraying the fronds a couple of times a week really keeps them happy. Overwatering or underwatering is the culprit that does most ferns in.

If you have a large fern, they take about a quart of water for each time you water them. So be sure not to over do or under water these plants.

April is a hard time for ferns, they are getting kinda shabby looking right now but give them a couple of weeks out on my deck and they will be glorious looking again.

Oh, and one more thing, no direct sunlight as ferns if you have noticed grow in the forests in the shade. To put them in direct sunlight will do them in also.
