Smile Mower Storage for the Winter

Preparing your mower for winter is simple and quick. Locate the oil drain plug, the oil filler port. Remember to disconnect the spark plug wire before working on an engine.

Drain the engine oil while the engine is warm, but not running. It only takes a minute to warm the engine oil, (if you have just a little gas remaining in the mower, let it run until it's out of gas). Refill with the type of oil that the engine manufacturer recommends.

Give the mower a thorough cleaning. Scrape off any debris that has accumulated under the deck. This debris will trap moisture and promote rust. Look for chipped paint. Sand, prime and repaint where touch ups are needed to prevent rust.

Keep the cylinder lubricated by placing a tablespoon of engine or household oil in the spark plug port. Clean and replace the spark plug or install a new one.

If your mower has a battery, remove it and store it in a cool, dry location. If your mower has pneumatic tires, put it up on blocks.

If you need a tuneup, or if you prefer to have someone else do the work, take your mower to a small engine repair professional to have it prepared for winter storage .

Default Re: Mower Storage for the Winter

These are great tips and thanks for the reminder. This not only goes for the mower but you need to remember other items such as the weed eater, hedge trimmer and anything else that will be stored for the winter.
