Plant now for next years spring curb appeal.
In most parts of the country, October is the perfect time to plant those spring flowering bulbs. Bulbs that can be planted now include daffodils, tulips, hyacinths, crocuses and a whole array of less common small bulbs.
Want some different ways to plant these? Try a couple of these. Layer those bulbs. You can dig a hole however long and wide you want it, but did it about 12 inches deep, add compost or good soil to the bottom then plant daffodil bulbs and cover. On top of them, plant tulip bulbs about 6 inches deep and cover, then last but not least plant a layer of crocuses or grape hyacinths about 3 inches deep and cover.
In the spring, each layer will bloom, one after the other with the grape hyacinths and crocuses coming up first, then the tulips will appear about the time the first flowers are done blooming, and lastly the daffodils will bloom leaving you with a continous array of flowers.
Did you know that you can plant bulbs in containers of almost any type? Plant the bulbs you want in the containers outdoors, then bring them in to the basement before the ground freezes, which will cause them to stay dormant until spring time when you can place them anywhere you like.
Remember to let tulip bulbs die naturally so that they will "spread" on their own.
Good luck on your "Plant Ahead Curb Appeal."
