Whether you are remodeling your home or even building a new home, the windows you choose will vastly effect the overall look of your home. Though what many fail to realize is that the window you choose will also greatly effect the energy efficiency of your home as well. It can be difficult to know the difference between the R-value and the U-factor, as well as those windows which claim to be low-E. Well it is time to remove that confusion.
Some styles of windows are of course more efficent when it comes to energy savings than others.
Casement windows which open from the side or top from a hinge by the means of a crank which is turned. These are the most efficent windows for the sash is designed to fit very tightly against the weather seal. They allow for very little air to enter or exit the home. When the wind gusts against a casement window the air actually pushes the window into the weather stripping which makes the seal even more tightly. These types of windows fit better into a contemporary design.
Another type of window is the double hung window. These are the more traditional window that most homes have. These have the upper and lower pane of glass. These window open by sliding the lower pane of glass upward. The seal which is used on these double hung windows tends to become quite damaged over time, and this results in more air being allowed to exit or enter the home. One good point of these double hung window is that many have the ability to be tipped inward to allow for easier cleaning, and this of course makes them more convenient.
Yet another type of window is the sliding window. These types of windows are basically a double hung window which slides from the left to the right rather than the normal up and down. These sliding windows are also subject to the same weather stripping damage that the normal double hung window face. Do to such damage to the weather stripping of these windows makes them not so efficent
Now the biggest factor of energy efficiency of your windows is the R-value. Most dont know what R-value is so the simple explanation of it is the measure of how much heat your windows are capable of preventing from being lost, so purchasing windows which have the highest possible R-value is going to be a better value for your home. R-3 is the lowest possible R-value you can purchase for your home, though the higher the rating the better off your energy efficiency will be. Problem which most people face is that the higher the R-value is the higher the price of the window will be, therefore it is important to seek the highest possible R-value that will also fit your budget.
The next factor you want to consider when choosing windows for your home is the U-factor. For those who do not know what a U-factor is, it is the measure of how well the window prevents leakage of air between the frame and sash. For those who live in cold climates will proably want to give just as much consideration for the U-factor as you do for the R-value. U-factors with less than 0.35 are very energy efficient.
Now what is considered the gold standard of window is the Low-E windows. Low-E windows have an inner as well as an outer pane of glass. The small area between the panes of glass is filled with an inert gas. This gas provides the ultimate insulation in windows with out compromising glass clarity.
When remodeling your home or building your home, keep in mind that there are building code requirements for many states. Before choosing windows for your home check out the building codes for your state, as some windows may not be permitted. This is especially important if your are purchasing windows from another state.
Just another idea you may want to look into is that there are some utility companies which offer rebates if you install these energy efficient windows in your home. In several cases these rebates have been enough that in the end you can purchase these great energy efficient windows for the same price as you would pay for an ordinary window. So be sure to check with your utility company to see if they offer such rebates in your area.
Any window which you install in your home which adds to the efficency will also add a whole lot of appeal to the home as well.
