Default Hillside Landscaping

I have a really steep hillside for a side yard. It is really difficult to keep the grass trimmed and it takes a long time too. I have been thinking about landscaping the entire hillside with rocks. I have seen it done in other places and if it's done right, it looks really nice.

I have also thought about just planting something that spreads out on its own. Something that would cover the entire hillside so that we wouldn't have to worry about the grass there anymore and yet it would look nice.

I have heard Junipers are one of the best to plant on hillsides as they help eliminate erosion as well as look nice.

I am undecided as yet but I definitely want to do something because the hill is simply too hard to keep up with.

You can do both really.. Do like a Rock garden and put plants in it that love rocks. The junipers will grow there too. And several other plants and ground covers love rock. The rock holds in the moisture and these plants love that.

I put rocks and juniper on a hill where i used to live and it looked great. I put a few other plants that love rock in amounst them. It was really pretty.

It would be nice if everyone had perfectly flat yards, because they would be much easier to take care of. Though sadfully that would make our areas pretty boring to look at.

Thankfully there are alot of different types of rocks and plants that can be used as you are suggesting to cover the entire area and leaving you a beautiful yard with out the hassle of dealing with almost killing yourself trying to get up there to cut the grass.

To make the rock garden portion of your landscaping even more appealing, try taking some of the rocks and painting them various colors and spreading them out on the hill side. This adds alot of color and beauty to your yard.

If your really good you can paint animals on several of the rocks and have yourself a little rock pet zoo going on as well. That would alot of fun for the kids to check out as well as the adults,LOL.
