Default Before you put up that fence

Before you put up that fence you have always been wanting. For privaticy or to keep the kids and dogs from wondering off. Know your zoning laws and what types of materials you are aloud and how high the fence is allowed to go. Most front yard fences are 4 foot and back yard is 6 foot but there may be conditions that allow you to put in higher fences.

Neighbor Disputes: Fences
Following are some things to keep in mind regarding fences and neighbor disputes.

Fences and Local Ordinances

Local fence ordinances usually regulate:

Height
Location
Material used, and
Appearance
Residents of subdivisions are often subject to even stricter homeowners' association restrictions concerning fences. In residential areas, local rules typically restrict backyard fences to a height of six feet, and front yard fences to a height of four feet. Exceptions do exist, and a landowner can seek a variance if there is a need for a higher fence. While some jurisdictions have specific aesthetic zoning rules with respect to fences, as long as a fence complies with local laws it cannot be taken down simply because it is ugly.

Remember if your tree hangs over your fence the neighbor is allowed to trim it back from there yard as long as it does not do harm to the tree.

Since we live in such a small town, I wonder if there are any zoning ordinances we have to follow when putting up a fence?

I will have to look into that and find the answer for small towns and what you would have to do, or if any permits would be needed.

Thank you for the information provided.

I live in a small town too, and we do have ordinances here that prevent putting up high fences in the front yard. They can be no higher than 4 feet. I'm not sure about the back yard though, I know a neighbor had an 8 foot fence put in and didn't have any problems, so maybe there isn't a limit on the height for backyard fencing.

Thanks for the reminder. There are many rules to follow
and you can't do anything with out first knowing the laws.
Check with your township and your county boards before
you do anything. The county has its own set of rules and
sometimes so does the township. I went to the township
and got copies of the noise ordinances cetera just to be
safe.
