Default When do you call it quits?

At what point do you call it quits as a renter? My daughter has a landlord that drags her feet about fixing things.

The most recent incident is a water leak in the apartment above her. The landlord had a fitting tightened thinking that was the issue. Now her ceiling in the dining room is ruined due to a repeat water leak.

She called me the other day and told me the landlord had a guy come over to see what was going on and he cut a hole in the dining room ceiling to look for the leak.

She now has to look at it until they get around to fixing it all. Thats if she finishes the work before my daughter moves in february. She has had enough and is waiting until then because that is when her lease ends.

Personally I would not have waited this long I would have taken her to court. She has left things unattended to the point that it damages the renters stuff.

When a landlord refuses to fix things like this water leak, your daughter could go to the health department to make a complaint as water damage can cause black mold which is dangerous to a persons health. And because of the fact that there are children in the home, that is more of a reason to turn it in.

Another option is to take your rent payment to the county clerk and pay it there. That way the landlord will not get her rent money until the repairs are made and she cannot void the lease or kick your daughter and her family out.

These are things that are available in my state, so you need to check to see what your state laws are.
